I shut down GNU Emacs 23 and launched it again. It opened circ.tex 
automatically (desktop got saved with a closed/deleted circ.tex!) and 
the irregular behaviour with _region_.tex is back again ...

I remember that on Monday I got asked for the TeX-master, which then 
was a completely different file (which has disappeared from this list 
as I wanted it to).
