why do you still have to use this machine, and, in particular, that OS?
It's very old, you must expect problems.

If keeping this machine in not a necessity, but rather a hobby, you
should understand that you are on your own.  It should be _your_ skills
which keep this machine alive, even with new versions of tools.

have you read automake-1.9.6/tests/README?
That file explains how you can investigate the details.

It's a free software, _you_ have the power to fix it.  ;-)

There will probably be only a few causes of these massive failures.
Try to find out, perhaps even prepare a patch, and try whether the
Automake maintainer will accept it.
