The Id "x" referred to is I believe the id tag for that command to be
run at that run level. I will take a guess that you are running
SysVinit from a RH system. There are many possibilities. You may
have a line like "x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon" in your
/etc/inittab. If /etc/X11/prefdm cannot be found or is corrupt then
it would generate a message and the symptoms you report.
Hmm... This is probably not a good forum for discussion of this
problem. I might suggest the comp.os.linux.setup news group.
