It has two possible meanings, as far as I can see. It might be the acronym 
for GNu Automated Tracking System, and it might stem from the word "gnat" 
which according to the Merriam Webster dictionary means "any of various 
small usually biting dipteran flies", i.e. a synonym for "bug". Others may 
be able to correct me, but I'd guess it's a combination of the two.
