It's origins are likely from the little bugs (flies) called gnats. There
is a GNU package called GNAT which is the GNU Ada Technology (or
Translator or something) that is a programming language and compiler.
Early in GNATS v3 development they tried to change to a different name to
avoid confusion: PRMS, Problem Report Management System. Some of the
documentation was changed but the switch was never completed.
