Subject: | [Bug-gne]Format of Unique Article Identifier |

Hello, All,This might have been discussed recently but I've been way out of the loop. One possible (and simple) method of article identification is to use an number which can include one (or more) decimal points and have the portion of the number before the point be the article number and the portion after be the version number of that article. Instead of having a set number of places before and after the decimal point we could leave it open to an infinite (potentially) number of decimal places. So the first article submitted to the repository would be 1.0, the second would be 2.0, etc. The initial revision to article 1 (i.e. the article itself) would be 1.0, the first "real" revision would be 1.1 and so on ... 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, etc. These are all revisions to the original article.
If someone made a revisions to article 1.2 then the version number could be 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.2.4, 1.2.5, 1.2.6, 1.2.7, 1.2.8, 1.2.9, 1.2.01, etc.
It's important NOT to think of these article identifiers as numbers but instead just identifiers. I think this system is completely extensible but I'm not assuming in the least that it's the best way to go about it. Just food for thought.
Ultimately whatever identifer system is developed I'd like to know that it has the robustness that the above has, e.g. branching versions, etc.
Thanks Much! Dan Geiser <address@hidden>

Will it link to an updated version of the original post? Each posting has it's own unique identifier, so the reference is to the article nominated. If you store usenet posts for years (like DejaNews for example) the references remain intact.
