tar bug?

To whom it may concern,

    I am running tar 1.13 on Slackware 7.1, and whenever I try to run
"tar -x <archive-name>" on an archive, nothing happens......I hit ENTER, the
cursor goes to the next line, but then nothing happens. The hard drive does
not, I believe, activate at any time. I have left this to run overnight, and
by the morning nothing had happened.
    Is there something I am doing wrong to cause this behavior, or do you
have suggestions how I could work around this? I have been extracting
archives with WinRAR on my Win98 partition, but this doesn't work on the new
kernel because the kernel files use case-sensitive filenames, whereas
Win/DOS doesn't distinguish.
