Because other VCSes are implementing the same extensions. Also, implementing "diff --git" support in patch would be as important.
prepend a/ and b/ in some way to the paths(*)
This is the lesser important part of my proposal; the fact that "diff --git" tracks mode changes would be a much more important and useful feature.
