Here is what rms said about the error function change in standards.texi.
Paul, maybe you'd like to cook up a more extensive change, or something?
In any case, can you send him some examples, etc.?

It makes no sense whatsoever to document at length practice we don't
recommend now. If that old code is really not usable any more, we
should delete the example and replace it with whatever we recommend.
But I wonder what various packages are in fact using nowadays.
For instance, could you send me some examples of code using the
gnulib error module?
movemail uses code much like that example, but passes only
pointers, so it will still work.
