Chris (or Thierry) may comment on that better, but AFAIK the background is:

  GRUB attempts to use LBA for accessing the El Torito emulated harddisk which
  doesn't support LBA and hence breaks booting from CD with El Torito. This
  patch is suposed to fix that problem.
