I have a guess as to what is happening.  As well as running `C-c C-t
C-m', can you separately try typing `M-x set-variable RET
debug-on-internal-error RET #t RET' and then selecting one of the
broken messages?  If a debugger buffer pops up when you do this, let
me know, particularly if the error is `The object #f, passed as an
argumemnt to xstring-length, is not a xstring'; you can just kill the
debugger buffer afterward by hitting `q'.
