Hi. I recently found out from someone that tar now supports
autodetection of the compression type. I guess its been this way since
version 1.15. However there isn't really anything in the man page to
indicate that it now works this way by default except the mention of the
-a option. Perhaps there should be something in the man page like this:
"tar will try to detect the compression used on the tar file according
to the filename extension."
Or at least put something next to the -a option that says its turned on
by default. If it does it by magic bytes instead of by extension then I
guess that would need to be stated.
Thanks,
Mark
