gdb 5.x works much better under AIX 4.3.x.  There may be further improvements
to gdb in the post 5.0 CVS tree -- I haven't been following it.

My suggestion would be to update to gdb 5.x, and see if the problem goes
away.  If it doesn't try figure out what it is that's core dumping.  It
sure would be nice if the AIX "file" command actually told you something
useful about core files.  :-)
