Can't get ddd to launch dbx on AIX4.2

Hi.  I'm trying to use ddd on AIX4.2.  I downloaded and installed the 3.1.6 binary (from the UCLA AIX software library), and the program runs, but is unable to launch the dbx debugger.  I've tried building a later version from source, but I'm missing some stuff for that, so 3.1.6 is the latest version I could find.

Can anybody help?

According to ~/.ddd/log, gdb starts but then exits with a return code of 1:

DDD 3.1.6 (rs6000-ibm-aix4.2.0.0), Copyright (C) 1999 TU Braunschweig.
Compiled with xlC
Requires X11R5, Xt11R5, Motif 1.2.3 (OSF/Motif Version 1.2.3)
Includes DDD core, manual, app-defaults, XPM 3.4.11, Athena Panner

$  ddd --dbx /u/rob/em/util/patch
+  /bin/sh -c 'exec dbx '\''/u/rob/em/util/patch'\'''
#  Hello, world!
#  Starting DBX...

#  Raising core file size limit from 1048576 to 2147483647 bytes...done.
#  Running DBX (pid 29858, tty /dev/pts/2)...
#  Current language: c/c++
#  Running DBX (pid 29858, tty /dev/pts/2)...Exit 1.
#  Thanks for using DDD 3.1.6!

I've tried setting a variety of resources in ~/.ddd/init (after blockTTYInput alone didn't help).
Here's what the file looks like now:

! DDD initialization file
! Enter your personal DDD resources here.
Ddd*blockTTYInput: On
Ddd*terminateOnEOF: Off
Ddd*synchronousDebugger: On
Ddd*useTTYCommand: On

! DO NOT ADD ANYTHING BELOW THIS LINE -- DDD WILL OVERWRITE IT
Ddd*dddinitVersion: 3.1.6

Thanks,
