Maybe not "harmful", but it does change the semantics since it fiddles
with focus.

Agreed. I'm not opposing the patch, I just want to make sure that we pass
along the fact that there's a bug, and the patch should include a comment to
the effect that it's a workaround for a bug in window-manager <foo>, version
<bar>.
