Right. Further debugging shows that neither of the two tests is true,
but "error" is called at the very end of x_connection_closed.

I could reproduce the issue with the following configuration. No GTK+.

In GNU Emacs (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit)
 of 2008-12-17 on a1iulm2
Windowing system distributor `The X.Org Foundation', version 11.0.10502000
