I have a naive question / whacky idea that maybe
someone can evaluate off the top of their head
much more quickly than I could myself.

Doesn't `screen' and similar programs give 
the ability to tile a text display with 
more than one virtual terminal?

Can't Emacs be persuaded to use multiple `screen'
virtual terminals as frames?

If the answer to both is "yes" then can't that
be usefully used as a way to prototype and try
out the idea of "four framelets around a central
edit area"?
