I tried it:

(dotimes (i 100)
  (sleep-for 1)
  (ebrowse-show-progress (format "%d" i)))

It seems pretty good to me.  It still interferes with regular mesages,
though.  So maybe it should be (optionally) used by
make-progress-reporter but it's not as good as a user-specified location
in the modeline.
