process I/O is creepingly slow |

This bug report will be sent to the Free Software Foundation,
not to your local site managers!
Please write in English if possible, because the Emacs maintainers
usually do not have translators to read other languages for them.
Your bug report will be posted to the address@hidden mailing list.
Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
Try the following:
M-x shell RET ls -l /etc | dd obs=1
The resulting process output crawls very very slow at first before
getting on-track. Things like M-x compile, running AUCTeX and a lot
of other things are very negatively affected in their performance by
this process I/O bug.
In GNU Emacs 21.3.50.11 (i686-pc-linux-gnu)
of 2003-03-27 on lola.goethe.zz
configured using `configure '--prefix=/usr/local/emacs-21' '--with-gtk''
