Yes I agree this would make a much bigger difference than adjusting the
border size (even with thick borders, the difference between an `in' 3D
button and an `out' 3D button is sometimes easy to miss).

A similar improvement would be to use shading to highlight selected
menu items, in addition to the 3Dness change.

It's just a matter of hacking... :-)

they're rather easy to hack on, actually, especially if you can get away
with just drawing stuff (as opposed to having to allocate [and thus keep
track of] any new resources colors/pixmaps/etc).

I wonder what people's thoughts are about the future of the various
widget toolkits that emacs supports, though; I guess Lucid will remain
the default for a fairly long time?
