    For non-ancient versions of gcc, why not just tell the compiler
    exactly what's wanted, e.g., by putting something the following in a
    header file somewhere:

    #if __GNUC__ >= 3 && __GNUC_MINOR__ >= 1
    # define NO_INLINE __attribute__((noinline))
    # define NO_INLINE

    ... and define x_error_quitter using NO_INLINE?

I think that is best.  (I dont have GCC docs so I could not look this
