[emacs-wiki-discuss] Planner.el Newbie Question

I have installed emacs for OS X from here:

My question is where is the elusive .emacs file that everyone talks
about editing.  I've found .emacs.d in my home directory, but it's a
folder.  If I need to create the file, where do I create it?

Also, where do I put the planner files?  I'm guessing it's in
Emacs.app > Resources > lisp > planner.el
but placing it there doesn't seem to work, probably because I need to
edit something in .emacs which I can't find.

I guess what would help is a super-basic-never-touched-emacs guide to
getting planner running for the first time on OS X.
