What happens when that entire line *should* be strike-through, though?
... ~check your ~/.emacs.el and your ~/.gnus.el ...~
where does strike-through begin/end on that line? if you're saying
the string "space followed by a ~" delimits the beginning/ending of
strike-through, then the above line gets marked as:
... <st>check your </st>/.emacs.el and your <st>/.gnus.el ...</st>
When what you really want is:
... <st>check your ~/.emacs.el and your ~/.gnus.el ...</st>
I second the use of "~~" of some other combination. ~ is just too
frequently used, and I think it'll lead to a lot of confusion.
