1. I wish that Adobe had a mail list that announced such changes!

2. I should give some more attribution for this:

Ian Kemmish of 5D (makers of OEM RIPs, etc...) pointed this out to me
a long time ago.  At the time he pointed it out, it wasn't in the
published spec.  Then an engineer from Adobe pointed it out to me when
answering some other questions of mine about the CFF spec.

Finally, I saw it in the specification about 1.5 months ago.

And just last night, I actually saw an example (I never saw such a use
of endchar, so I "rolled my own.")

I wanted to explain the quotes around "understand" in my original
reply:

I thought you understood in principle what my point was, you were just
disagreeing with me.  One of my less than nice attributes is that I
can step on toes without realizing it. ;)
