I doubt that Adobe has _any_ power nowdays.
Depends on what market you are looking at...
In the publishing market, Adobe is (and will remain
indefinitely) the leader in technology and products. Any doing
serious publishing are using Type 1 fonts (as much as I scream and
yell at them about how much better OpenType is!) with one or more
Adobe software application on either Mac OS or Windows.
So, wether we like it or not - default font format would be format choosen by
Microsoft. Which, I suppose, would be TrueType (2nd order) with
OpenType tables.
I agree with David that the format of the future is OpenType
- most likely starting as TrueType but with extended tables. Both
Microsoft and Apple are shipping their standard OS fonts in this
format...
Adobe is also only doing OpenType fonts now, but starting
from their Type 1's and then adding the new tables...
