These files were part of the original gcl distribution at

ftp://ftp.ma.utexas.edu/gcl/

at the point of Dr. Schelter's death and my assignment as maintainer.
There is no apparent history described in these files that I can see,
nor is there a cvs log.  

I'm working under the assumption that all license issues pertaining to
files which were distributed with gcl before I became maintainer have
been resolved by the previous maintainers in their correspondence with
the authors and the FSF in the process of getting GCL accepted as an
official GNU project.  Since I've been assigned to the project, I'm
trying to keep a log of all such issues pertaining to new files in the
cvs log, as well as in the file debian/changelog, and reporting the
effects of included components on the final binary in the startup
splash screen.

Looking through gcl.info+texi.tgz distributed on this site, it is also
apparent that there are other auxiliary files pertaining to figures
and the like which we are not currently including in the main source
tree.  These appear to have been automatically generated by programs
to which Dr. Schelter had access, i.e. they refer to his home
directory.  It may be possible at some point for someone to ask the
folks at the University of Texas for some historical background.
