You may be interested in checking out monotone ( http://venge.net/monotone );
it's basically similar to git and hg (or perhaps the other way around, since
git's design started out as being roughly a clone of monotone's).  It does
support directory renaming.

I won't try to go into a fully summary of the advantages and disadvantages of
it compared to all other VCSes in the world, just an FYI...
