About the back-compatibility, to avoid too much development overhead; the
tradition has been to keep all such breaks with previous versions in a
"Changed features" section of the 'NEWS' file for each release. 

The 'NEWS' file is included in every release announcement and when users
search the name of the old option in the 'NEWS' file, they will find the new
name for it, and from which version it was changed, and a description of why
that change was made.
