It would be intuitive if the GUI showed not the LaTeX sequence but the result, insertions or searches could be also typed with regular characters and then the
GUI should turn them into LaTeX sequences... Notice that there are LaTeX
packages that do exactly that...
OK so GUI should immediatly convert LaTeX sequences into UTF-8 characters, so standardization would be easy. LaTeX sequences would just be easier ways to type characters. "LaTeX packages" : do you mean directly usable libraries or external programs ? The better would be simple libs to do this.
