Problem Loading Image in Octave for further Processing

Dear colleagues,
I tried loading images named lena.bmp according to instruction in octave manual but receive following error messages:
octave:1> I = loadimage ("lena.ppm"); error: `loadimage' undefined near line 1 column 5
error: evaluating assignment _expression_ near line 1, column 3 octave:1>
I run octave 2.9.12 under my Ubuntu 7.10 machine.
Anybody can help me what went wrong and what to do next?
