I've only taken a glance, but it appears to me that the labels can be  
added without intimate knowledge of the guts of Octave.

You might begin by looking at contour.m and __contour__.m

Regarding your problems building, what OS are you using? and exactly  
what was the syntax you used to configure Octave?
