After this patch, I installed the new automake HEAD (1.9a), and ran it in
top_srcdir with `reconfdirs=. ./bootstrap`.  Then from a VPATH build
directory left over from the tests before that commit, I ran `make dist`...
the Makefiles regenerated themselves using automake-1.9a for the main
tree, and automake-1.8c for the test dirs, and continued on to generate
a working dist :-D

To more 50 minute bootstraps required.
