I know it is strange, but I've just done it a few times as AC_DEFUN and then 
changed to m4_defun, then a few more times there etc. I get no warnings when 
it is m4_defun'ed and one when it is AC_DEFUNed.

I have zero clue as to why, I also see it as only being AC_REQUIREd. I 
suggest you downgrade to a released autoconf temporarily to see for yourself.

By the way, if you are going to make a release on Mac OS X using a released 
autoconf, you'll need to patch it just a little for for fortran and crt2.0.
