Because I didn't know how to not compile them, while still having
'make dist' work. I also didn't want to edit makefiles whenever I
added an extra file (ie adding that file to EXTRA_DIST as well).
I'm sure that these technical problems can be worked around;
please do so. There's no documentation / end-user reason why we
build input/new/ stuff.
