Why not use a sed one-liner?

sed -i 's/[ \t]*$//' filename

*****

$ echo -e "Trailing spaces:  \nTrailing tabs:\t\t" > ws-test

$ cat -A ws-test
Trailing spaces:  $
Trailing tabs:^I^I$

$ sed -i 's/[ \t]*$//' ws-test

$ cat -A ws-test
Trailing spaces:$
Trailing tabs:$
