Yes, it handles them differently. On many instruments (such as
strings), there is a big difference between a tie between two notes and
a slur. You may want to consult your music teacher or a musician friend
about the difference; it would be easier to explain in person with an
instrument to demonstrate, instead of via email. :)
I believe that the shape of the tie ~ and slur () is slightly different,
and in the midi output a tie f4 ~ f4 will sound the same as f2, while a
slur f4( f4) will sound like f4 f4.
