There is a difference in what it means. f8~f basically means f4, while f8(f)
means that there are two distinct tones.
The two look the same, but there is a difference in midi output. Second,
things such as lyrics alignment may differ. Third, \tieUp affects ties but
not slurs, while \slurUp affects slurs but not ties (i'm not sure, but it
might be the case that the default directions sometimes might vary between
slurs and ties).
