WordPad isn't really a text editor. It's normal files are RTF files which are what Word files are based on. If you are going to use WordPad and save as text you might as well use MS Word or OpenOffice (neither of which I would ever consider for LIly). Besides the several editors commonly used by LilyPond people mentioned on this list there are several nice shareware editors which really are text editors like EditPad.
