Thanks, this is helpful (although you mean U+2AFD). Sadly, lilypond
doesn't seem to have a suitable glyph:

programming error: FT_Get_Glyph_Name () error: invalid argument
continuing, cross fingers
programming error: Glyph has no name, but font supports glyph naming.
Skipping glyph U+10002AFD, file
/spare/lilypond/usr/share/lilypond/current/fonts/otf/CenturySchL-Roma.otf
continuing, cross fingers

Do I just need a more up-to-date lilypond [I have 2.12.2] , or is this
a system issue?
Doesn't work on 2.13.7 either.
Why don't you just combine the double slash?

\markup { { \italic: } \hspace #-1.25 "/" \hspace #-1.25 "/" \hspace #-1.25 { \italic : }}

Marc
Many thanks,
