mmm, the fact that it's slow can come from 2 reasons IMHO:
- maybe your X11 implementation does not have extensions that XFree86 on
x86 Linux has, such as dga2 for instance, and/or Allegro is not able
to use these extensions, or their equivalent, on your platform.
- LW on x86 uses native i386 assembly code, which usually speeds things
up. You can change this on the fly on i386 builds with "Options ->
Rules -> Advanced -> Algorithm". You should see the game slow down as
well on your friend's computer. Point is you can't turn assembly code
on on MacOSX, for this code does not exist (yet).

There's no easy way to solve these issues.

However, one thing you can do to speed things up is:
- turn off the "wave effect". "Options -> Graphics -> Waves" with the
menus, or "F4" within the game.
- reduce the number of frames per sec "Options -> Speeds -> frames/s".
Default is 25, putting it down to say 18 keeps the game playable while
making it faster. Point is it will not look as smooth as with the
  default settings.
- and of course you can also try smaller maps...

Have a nice day,

Christian.
