Just a quick update. I figured out in the end that what I was doing was
building the full Xorg, rather than staying with Kdrive.
It seems that Kdrive should support USB keyboards without
xf86-input-keyboard-1.3 (I think). In xorg-server-1.4 I think things
changed. I can no longer find an option: BuildXInputExt as Alan
suggested.
I googled around and it seems as though there may be some problem with
this version:

However so far I've not really come up with a solution.
If anyone has an ideas, please speak up as I'm flapping around a bit
here (I don't really structurally understand how xorg fits together).
