This advice wasn't so safe. "make distclean" removed userdefs.h and
configure refused to run. Fortunately I had made a backup of my
modified version. I reconfigured, recompiled as before and - surprise
surprise -- it works! This seems weird to me since the only thing I
did the first time was modify userdefs.h and the second time I used
the identical file.

I suspect the distribution wasn't clean when I got it.

For some variety I tried configuring it to use slang instead of
ncurses and this is what I got...

address@hidden lynx2-8-1]# ./configure --with-screen=slang --enable-persistent-c
[ yadda yadda yadda ]
checking for -lslang in /usr/lib... no
checking for -lslang in /usr/lib/slang... no
configure: error: Cannot link slang library
address@hidden lynx2-8-1]# ls -l /usr/lib/libslang*

Thanks for your advice guys.
