I find that part very confusing. Is it really necessary to show a
variant that won't ever be used?

Would we loose any information if we shortened that to a plain:

| +    ln -s '$(1).native/gio/glib-compile-schemas' 
'$(1)/gio/glib-compile-schemas'

?
