well I've thought a bit about this. For power users, this feature
may be useful, but in general I think everything should just work
without the user having to configure anything.
I think this could be very useful for those users like me who don't want to install different programs when just one is available (for example, I use GGV for both .ps and .pdf or OpenOffice.org for all which is 'office' document).

There would also be different ways in which this could be implemented.
For example, a standalone GUI program could be used. Or some UI elements
could be added to the viewer (sort of like a toolbar).
Why don't something integrated in Mozilla? Is this simply possible? I mean, you configure 'mozilla-bonobo' plugin directly in Mozilla: w/o Mozilla you can't use the 'mozilla-bonobo' plugin, so why a standalone GUI?
