Follow-up Comment #10, bug #52621 (project octave):

Looking at closereq.m, we would need to slow things down and use a for loop in
the m-file if we want to implement things exactly like Matlab.

Currently, the code just collects the figures to process and then runs

  __go_execute_callback__ (figs, "closerequestfcn");

If every figure to be closed should be the gcf then this would need to be
modified to

for fig = figs
  figure (fig{1});  # make figure current
  __go_execute_callback__ (fig{1}, "closerequestfcn");

Actually, since figure.m is a reasonably complex m-file, we might want to
shorten that up by just using

set (0, "currentfigure", fig{1});
