I have been in correspondence with the author, mostly to check that publishing my patch for use with Octave wouldn't contravene the license on his code.
He was very civil and confirmed that there there was no problem with the (BSD-style) license, but didn't volunteer to make changes himself and I'm reluctant to press on that point.
