3D1 ?  How's that different from setting GTK_USE_XFT=1 ?

Looks like a Pango bug. May be related / similar to
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72299

Yes, you should. Create a new bug report in http://bugzilla.gnome.org
for 'pango'. You'll probably need to collect some more info for the
Pango maintainers to resolve this bug.
