   I finally got Ratpoison to start up, however with few errors.
   sh: line 1: xsetroot: command not found
   sh: line 1: xterm: command not found

Do you have access to these commands from a normal terminal?  If so,
are you supplying the full pathname to RP wherever it is to execute
them?

   Since I simply can't grasp ( at least for now) all the options and
   numerous ratposion's commands, can anyone give a simple overview of
   session with say, four windows split the screen and running for instance
   firefox, sylpheed, perhaps vx, something else and switching between
   them?

Try something like this after you start up:

% firefox &
% sylpheed &
% vx &
C-t n
C-t n
C-t p
C-t s
C-t S
C-t Q
C-t w
C-t 4
C-t 3
C-t ?

   running ratpoison inside of a aterm, my aterm gets maximized and I can
   see some sort of a grey borders. 

Try some variation on this:

  defpadding -2 -2 -2 -2
  defborder 0

You might also take a look in the contrib directory and on the Wiki
for more documentation.
