The update script on www.gnu.org calls cvs up with -d.
The evaluation directory cannot be anonymously updated.
$ cvs update -Pd evaluation
cvs server: Updating evaluation
cvs server: cannot open directory /webcvs/evaluation: Permission denied
cvs server: skipping directory evaluation
