Follow-up Comment #5, task #7782 (project administration):

Jonathan,

you're for sure quoting a source (XFree86.org) that is not
authoritative for the licensing clauses (since it's a BSD
license, BSD itself should be taken as authoritative,
shouldn't it?). So you could even interpret that as XFree86
not quoting the BSD license correctly, with respect to the
"All Rights reserved". OTOH, that sentence is essentially
meaningless and not worth discussing at all.

What's probably more interesting is the use of the term
"Modified BSD license" in the project registration dropdown
list, because that term is simply not commonly used, and the
result of using it is what you are seeing here. There's the
original BSD license (where the UCB officially dropped the
original clause #3, the one with the `advertising materials'),
and there's a so-called `simplified BSD license' as it is
used e.g. by the FreeBSD project (now also officially approved
by the opensource initiative) where in addition, clause #4
has been removed. Both certainly qualify as being a
`modification', so the intention of the name used in the
dropdown list is simply not clear. If you are only willing
to accept the FreeBSD license, then please explicitly state
it that way. (Btw., the FreeBSD license still has that
rather pointless ``All Rights Reserved.'' sentence as well.)

What Axel is using here is the BSD license with clause #3
removed, which is a widely used licensing model in the
opensource world -- including in other projects that are
hosted on savannah.
